The Most Scariest Game Of Gaming History (Resdent Evil 2)

Perhaps one of the most memorable and scariest games of the last decade has to be Resident Evil 2, released on the PlayStation One in December 1997 by Capcom, sequel to the survival horror game Resident Evil 1. The game is truly worthy of being called a sequel as Resident Evil 2 improved on almost every aspect of the original and offered gamers more than their money’s worth with more action, more terror, more weapons and more enemies.
The game takes place a few months after the events of the first game and sees the whole of Raccoon City infected with the T-virus which had infected the people and creatures of the mansion in the first game. Two new characters enter the city almost simultaneously namely Leon S. Kennedy, a rookie cop of the Raccoon City police department and Claire Redfield, sister of S.T.A.R.S member Chris Redfield, and they immediately find themselves stuck in this nightmare of the whole town being infested with zombies.
The game starts in the streets of Raccoon City and it almost takes your breath away because you have got fire burning around you, destroyed and wrecked cars all over the place and if that was not enough, zombies would come to eat you. With so much to take-in from the get go what was even challenging was the absence of tutorial to tell you about your next move, instead the game forces you to figure it out on your own. Playing the game for the first time, my character died around six to eight times in the first few minutes as I was trying to figure out what I had to do and where I had to go but when I finally figured it out, I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. Of course, the game has manuals but the kind of start this game takes is something I had never seen in a game before.
What makes Resident Evil 2 so memorable is the horror that could be found around almost every corner and after every step that you took; from terrifying looking creatures such as the lickers (a wall climbing creature with a huge tongue and sharp claws and teeth), the hordes of the undead, giant creatures such as poisonous spiders and moths to scary mutated bosses. And specially, the final boss that has a huge eye budding out of its right arm.
Every creature that you came across sent a chill down your spine. Not only was the design scary, but there were times when you would go about your business exploring areas looking for items in the eerie silence and suddenly one of these creatures would break through the window and attack you.
For instance, lickers would break through glass, zombies would play possum on the floor, waiting to grab your leg, some would be crawling on their torsos to bite your feet, and yet, the nightmare did not just end there. You would see mutated dogs running towards you, making you jump out of your seat. Then there is the boss fight between you and the giant crocodile inspired by the movie Jaws (I believe), in which the only way you could kill the crocodile is by making it swallow a gas cylinder and then blowing it up. All in all the horror part of the game was unnerving and frightening.
There were a lot of gameplay elements that the sequel borrowed from the original. For instance, the original had two characters with which you could play and so did the sequel. Although, the stories of the two characters in the original were different from each other, in this game they are pretty much the same. Next, the inventory system was also left intact for better or worse.
Moreover, the graphics of the game and the sound effects were a great improvement over the original and gave a cinematic feeling to the play. Each environment looked distinct from each other and wore a deserted look.
With great realism and fluidity in the moves, both enemies’ and other characters’ design was excellent.
The sound of zombies moaning or that of lickers licking their way towards you, had the scariest effect. Plus each weapon had a different sound and upgraded weapons fired more loudly than their normal counterparts.
Another neat feature in the game was of “the new scenario”. After finishing the game with one character if you save and start the game with the other character, the game starts from a different point on the streets, the character enters the police station from a different area, has more story inputs and a much detailed ending.
Other features such as hidden costumes for both characters and the ability to search corpses for items make this game a complete package and a must have for anyone looking for a great action/horror game.
